I was doing my normal everyday surf of the web one day when I stumbled upon a post on In The Gnar. It was a post about the Ryan Fudger interview I did a month back. There was a picture of Ryan along with a caption that read something like, "I'm not a big fan of clicked, but this interview with Ryan Fudger is pretty good." My first reaction was, what did I do to annoy this guy? Oh well, fuck it. But, it started to eat me up a little, I just wanted some sort of outside feedback on what he didn't like about it. Basically, he's not a big fan of all the fluff, you know the shit, Chinese karaoke lady, Kim K.'s ass. Sometimes it gets a little out of hand I agree, but I can't get enough of that shit. Anyway, Nick and I began emailing back and forth about BMX and blogging, and how he runs In The Gnar and works for Vimby, and how I wish I did too. In one of the emails he told me about this zine he's been putting out for a little while and is now on the 5Th issue. He asked if I wanted a copy and if I liked it maybe do a little write up about it. Fast forward to now...
Zine in hand, first reaction: Holeshot, hmm is this some sort of racing zine? Open zine, first page credits and thanks with throwback pictures of old BMX racing, dudes sporting Ecko's with Jofa's.
Next page: Dude with dreads 180-ing over a rail. Not a racer zine, sweet.
The zine is Lo-Fi which is my favorite part about it. I'm so sick of a glossy, over produced, 120 page book of ads. Which, the ads seem to be getting gayer and gayer each month. I don't need a close up on Allan Cooke's face. And will someone please tell Corey Bohan to put on some real jeans. We get it, you do dickfoot 3's and you get hot chicks, we get it. Anyway, Holeshot has some great material within it's black and white recycled paper. A 10th grade book report comes to mind on how hemp went from a cash crop in the 1700's, to life in prison by the 1920's. I poke fun about the 10th grade book report style, but it's actually one of the most informative things I've read since JPR explained how the S&M porn came about. There are a couple great pics by Chris Dempsey of Sean Burns during a Bone Deth tour a few years ago. And, there are some great collages of random shit that reminds me of the old Skunk Bro's zine from the 90's.

My favorite part of the whole issue was the page above. The article titled $BMX$ talks about a conversation that I have had on many a drunken night. Most recently was when I met JTML for the first time. The conversation is about how BMX keeps trying to be skateboarding and how everyone bitches that skaters are paid, and bikers don't get shit. To quote the article: "People wonder why the money doesn't flow like it does in skateboarding and there's only one simple answer to that inquiry. BMX isn't skateboarding, it never will be."
Exactly.
Also on that same page is a how to on drinking beers in the shower. "Poor Man's hot tub"
I really enjoyed reading Holeshot and I hope Nick keeps up with it. I think it is something that helps BMX find it's own niche and true identity. Think about how many basketball zines you've seen, or baseball crews coming out with their own edits. It doesn't happen. Even skateboarding as of late has seemed to really lose it's creativity, and edge. I was just watching TV and saw some commercial for the Disney channel about two skateboarding brothers, or some shit. What the hell is that? Paid? Yes. Lame? Absolutely. You can argue this with me and mention the McDonald's ad with Edwin wearing that gay ass helmet, or Nike jumping on the band wagon. But, as long as there are creative people taking the time to make good art, and not worry about making money off of everything, BMX can keep what little dignity it still has left.
If you want a copy go to the Holeshot site, and hit Nick up.

Fuck you Bissell. I know it's you to. You're the only other person with worse spelling and grammar than Floyd.
PS. I never said Corey sucked, in fact he's one of the few who makes dickfoot look good (white pants no good). And, BMX IS better than skateboarding, which is what I was saying, but your ass can't comprehend more than one sentence at a time.
