I NEED YOUR HELP

I can't do this on my own, the powers at be start taking my emails with a grain of salt. But, they will start paying attention when they hear you. I need emails from riders, supporters, and most of all PARENTS. Here is an email that I received from a parent who's son lives here in Tucson, she lives in Milwaukee, WI. just read it:

For the City Council members:

I am the mother of 2 BMX riders - one in the city of Tucson - and I wanted to email my support for allowing BMX riders to use the Santa Rita Skate Park. There are places in Milwaukee that allow both skateboards and BMX bikes and both groups co-exist quite well together. I've gone to watch the BMX boys ride at these places and although it looks chaotic, there's a well-choreographed dance going on between the bikes and the skateboards. I've watched for hours and there were no accidents, no altercations, just fun. I was skeptical and a little worried until I saw how well they did together. All of the parents here are happy that the kids can ride at the parks. BMX riders need a safe, legal place to ride and they should be allowed at the Santa Rita Skate Park. The two groups will get along fine, the riders will have a safe place to ride - a win-win in my opinion. All the communities that have skateparks around here allow both skateboards and BMX bikes and they all find that it is a good thing for the kids and in turn good for the community. Please vote in favor of allowing BMX riders at Santa Rita.
Thank you, Maureen Haig Milwaukee, WI

I need emails like these. You know why? Because this is the response Ms. Haig and I received from the Parks and Rec. director Fred Gray.

Dear Ms. Haig: Thank you for your email regarding the need for a BMX park which was forwarded to us via Mike Hines. Tucson Parks and Recreation generally supports the joint, multiple and shared use of facilities when appropriately planned and designed for such use. However, for over ten years, the Santa Rita Skate Park was planned as a skate park and was designed and constructed for skateboard use only. The incorporation of BMX bike use would have required structural design modifications in order to improve the park’s overall durability. Such modifications include stronger psi concrete, the additional use of vertical metal edges on ledges and metal plates abutting round coping to protect the concrete. Again, none of these design modifications were included and the facility was constructed for skateboard use only and the project designer does not recommend BMX bikes at this particular facility. The Parks and Recreation Department recognizes and understands the popularity of BMX bike riding as well as the lack of local facilities for this activity. There will be future opportunities for the inclusion of such facilities as part of park improvement and construction projects. I invite your sons to participate in the planning process for those projects to ensure that BMX bike riding facility needs are addressed. In the meantime, your sons may wish to visit the BMX track at Pima County Parks and Recreation’s Manzanita Park located at 5250 S. Westover. For additional information, please visit their website at: http://www.pima.gov/nrpr/parks/index.htm. Thank you for your interest and I look forward to working with other roller/wheel sports enthusiasts to develop future facilities that can be shared by all user groups.
Sincerely,
Fred H. Gray, Jr.
Director
Tucson Parks and Recreation 900 S. Randolph Way Tucson, AZ 85716 (520) 791-4225

Can someone else please remind Mr. Gray that we don't race? Not to mention the fact that you need a yearly membership of 60.00 dollars, and you have to pay every time you want to ride the track. How much does the Santa Rita "skate" park cost to ride daily? Other than the fact that taxes get taken out my check every month, nothing.

Here's the deal. I need emails like Ms. Haig's from you, your own experience, the times you got harassed, arrested, yelled at, or hurt when you weren't in a safe legal place. I need them from your parents who hope that you are riding in a safe legal place. The nonsense about not designed for bikes is a non issue, do you think it's a greater liability to have children in the streets than in a safe park? It is up to our elected officials to provide parks and safe places for the public, not the designers. It was Parks and Rec.'s job to realize that multi-use facilities is the norm nowadays. I'm even looking into retrofitting the park with the necessary metal to make it "bike friendly" as they say, what is Parks and Rec. doing? I feel that Parks and Rec didn't do their homework on this issue and they are trying everything they can to side step it.

You can email them through me at bikehines@gmail.com or feel free to email Mr. Gray and Mr. Miranda directly (Mr. Miranda is Mr. Gray's boss)

fred.gray@tucsonaz.gov

richard.miranda@tucsonaz.gov

They have definitely been reading my emails, so you can CC me if you want to. I will also read some of the letters at the city council meeting on September 9th at 5:30.

Which brings me to another point, we have to go to this meeting! This one will be huge, local media is going to be on hand, if we make enough noise they will listen. Please help your city, your friends, and your fellow rider by attending. We can't get in, or a new park without proving we need one.

Thanks,
Mike Hines

Speaking of the Peraza brothers, Kevin has some clips in this little edit. There are some good moves in here. This proves to me that a BMX park is more than needed, tons of kids I've never seen riding spots I grew up going to.

The Peraza Brothers

Photobucket
This weekend Miracle, shorts, Bissell, and I took a trip to the southside of town to meet up with the Peraza family. There are four shredders in the family starting with their dad who grew up riding BMX back in the day. Peep this Miami hopper with raditude on a classic Skyway Street Beat.
Photobucket
Their dad is super supportive and built a really fun wallride in the backyard. All three of his boys are really talented on two wheels, even the youngest one Victor, at 9 nine years old. Victor still likes to mess around on his Razor scooter more than his 16" bike, but I have a feeling he'll be leaving that scooter to rot in the backyard soon. He can almost pull tailwhips on his 16" bike and does good 180's, too. He's got two older brothers to compete with, so I have a feeling he'll be amazing in about oh, 6 months. The middle brothers name is Kevin, and he was on a mission this weekend, either that or he just chews up whips and farts out flairs for the hell of it. I'm going with the ladder. Kevin pretty much has your checklist of tricks on lock. Barspin...

Sure, why not.

Might as well throw in a ridiculous no footed can in there too. Did I mention it's his 15th birthday next week? Anyway, the kid should be traveling with Barnum and Bailey once he's old enough to work. The older brother David kept it low key, he's battling a little injury and staying healthy for the race scene. I've seen the two brothers do 3-whip trains over their mobile box jump. I don't even like jumping that trailer slash death trap, let alone following somebody while they do a 3-whip. Ridiculous. Anyway, us old guys had some fun too. Bissell got down with some raditude...
Photobucket
Miracle scared the shit out of all us by going way too fast at the wallride first thing out of the van. But, he rode away and we got a good laugh.
Photobucket
We left the brothers house, rode a good ditch, then went an hit some jumps in 110 degree temperature. Get some powerade and suck it up, that's how we do. Chuckie caught some sweet air under his tires at the jumps, haven't seen him hit dirt in awhile, it was a damn good day.

Hardwork Pays Off

This is Dean, Dean and the guys in Vancouver, Washington worked their asses off to get a park where bikes are allowed, no strings attached. This is what we have to do, we have to go to city council meetings, like the one I have scheduled, and we have to make our presence known. Almost exactly one year ago I contacted the Tucson parks and rec asking if bikes were going to be allowed at the park. You know what they said? "Bikes? Bikes, um Peg are bikes allowed in the roller skating park?" "You mean the skatepark?" Said, Peg Weber of Parks and Rec to the lady who answered my phone call. "No, no bikes, it's a skateboarding park."

What I'm getting at here is, nobody even knew BMX bikes existed outside a race track, and they had no idea we rode in skateparks. I had a meeting at the Parks and Rec building about a month later with Peg Weber. Chris Miracle and I explained to them what freestyle BMX was, after the meeting and not realizing how much we need a place to ride, they said, "No, sorry bikes aren't meant to ride in skateparks." I was pretty offended and pissed off. But, that's what the park designer told them, no bikes allowed. Sure, you can get mad at the designers, you can get mad at the city, but that's not going to get you anywhere. You have to be annoying, you have to go to city council meetings, you have to get meetings with city managers, park directors, and you have to email your council members almost daily. This is the only way they will pay attention. You don't just water the ground and poof a skatepark is born, there's a ton of politics involved. Persistence is key when dealing with politicians.

The skaters of Tucson have waited 10 years for the Santa Rita skatepark, BMXer's were not at the meetings ten years ago. Then again 10 years ago bikes had a place to go, and we were not thinking of the future. I remember hearing about the meetings, I remember the plans, but at no point did anyone say no bikes allowed. Back then all the skaters and BMXer's rode Celestial skatepark, and a lot of us became friends. Seems like some of our friends are enjoying that sweet luxury of smooth tranny and free chlorinated water from the fountain while you and I dodge Chevy's.

There's a guy in town that bitches about politics and skaters, and fair use, blah blah blah. But, just before he started bitching about fair use and skatepark designers, he was really quick to change his hole bike into a scooter, just so he could use the park... Quit complaining, quit flip-flopping, quit trying to make a dollar, and take action, no one will get in any park, or get one built if you whine and bitch all day. Get meetings, go to meetings, and prove we need a park. Quit bitching about skaters, or skatepark builders, cause guess what? They built the bike parks in Arizona, too. And, I guarantee they will build another.

PS. get your facts straight.

Another Reason To Hate The Cowboys

The Cowboys just had their first pre-season opener at their new 100 billion dollar stadium. One crazy feature is, they have the largest screen in the world. But, some idiot decided to only put it 90 feet up from the stadium floor. Way to go Jerry Jones.

Harrassed Then Confiscated

I just had a conversation via text message with Michael from HighFive (pictured above w/ his bike) about an incident that happened this weekend. I guess Michael was riding through the UofA (University of Arizona, AKA UofAss) on his way to Jack's house when he was surrounded by two police cars (He was not doing "stunts" at the time). They were threatening him with a grip of charges, no brakes, no light, riding on the sidewalk, being unsafe, not listening... One of the cops acted "cool" and he ended up getting a charge of riding where not permitted, and they confiscated is bike on top of it, he'll be lucky to get it back today. I guess the UofA police consider BMX bikes skateboards, because that's what it said on the ticket. Do I need to go into the whole, BMXer's get harassed daily, we don't have a legal place to ride argument? Or, can you make your own up? If the police consider our bikes the same as skateboards, why doesn't Parks and Rec? I also see kids on mountain bikes and long boards cruising through the UofA mall on a daily basis, why don't they get charged? I think until the city gives us a safe, legal place to ride our bikes we should be allowed to use the campus and downtown areas as our own make shift park, don't you? I understand skaters getting in trouble, they have 5 parks in town to go to. Therefore, police can say, "you have no reason to skate here, you have designated places to skate". Maybe it's in the best interest of the university to make a designated skate/bike park on campus, then there is absolutely no excuse for me to do 180's down the 3X4's in the modern languages' building just north of the mall near the entrance to the below ground undergrad class rooms. Or, ride the library that has a nice gap, two mellow square rails, a wallride, some fun manual pads, hot girls, tiny shorts, water fountain. Somebody get me the number to the UofA president I got a proposition for him, this could bring more people to the university. Think about how many kids would want to go school here if we had the sickest park on campus, mad kids.

Amazing Idea

Standard and Vintagebmx have teamed up to offer one hell of a good idea. You get to design your own custom frame, any way you want it, including color, and if you win, they make your frame free of charge. You could have a pierced top tube like a STA, pierced head tube like a Menstrual Cycle or Kink Empire Revision B, or anything else you can come up with... maybe a loop tail rear end like the old Mongoose's had, hell maybe even a frame stand or two. Peep the details of the contest right here.
The only downside is, you have to be a member of the vintagebmx.com website, which costs $35 a year, but if you win, it will be well worth it.

The BMX Riders Organization (BRO) is looking for dedicated people around the world to work on BMX advocacy.

Our Mission: BRO is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing information and assistance to those seeking public facilities for BMX freestyle.

We want legal, hassle-free places for people to ride. Our main focus is on skate parks, but we also believe that the same approach can be used to get sanctioned dirt jumping facilities and flatland spots. We will tackle these issues with a fresh perspective and will work closely with our experienced skateboarding counterparts to ensure success.

The re-launch will include a new website with lots of information including literature, statistics, news, and schedules of events.

As someone who is involved with BMX, we know you want to help other communities embrace their BMX riders. This is your opportunity to get involved on the ground floor of something big, sustainable, and deeply important. How often do you get the chance to be a founding member of something? Even one hour a week can make all of the world of difference.

Contact us and share with us what you have to offer!

Our email address is recruit@bmxriders.org.

City Council Meeting

Wednesday, September 9th at 5:30 pm will be the most important day for BMX in Tucson.

All the council members, the mayor, the city manager, are very aware of this subject right now and the only way we can convince them to allow us shared access is to go to this meeting. We need this one to be huge, I need everyone to show up, the city council members will soon be voting on whether or not we will be allowed to ride Santa Rita skate park. If the BMX riders of Tucson truly show up to this meeting the council will be blown away. We need parents to come and speak, we need signs, we need support. I really don't think the city of Tucson realizes how many of us there are. Please help! Tucson bike riders stand up, if you want a place to ride show up at this meeting! I don't care if you don't like the park, I don't care if someone you don't like might be there, this isn't about that. This is about having a safe, legal place to ride. To show that we will need a bigger, better, place to ride in the very near future. This will help speed up the Kory Laos project, and this might even help us get access to every park in the city. I want over a 100 there, can we make it happen?

We will meet at the blocks (El Presidio Plaza) at 5:00pm on Wednesday Sept, 9th. Represent the sport you love.

Santa Rita Skate Park Update

It's been over 8 months since I had my first meeting with Parks and Rec over the issue of allowing BMX in Santa Rita skate park. This morning I met with Asst. city manager Richard Miranda, and Parks and Rec director Fred Gray to discuss the possibility. I was hoping for an immediate victory on the subject, but of course that's never how it works. Both Mr. Miranda and Mr. Gray were very willing to listen to what I had to say and they even let me put on a little demo for them to show how bikes would use the facility. Neither of them have the power to say yes or no, but Mr. Miranda said he would go to bat for us and have the city council decide the outcome. In a way I was disappointed, I really thought that this would be the end of the fight and that Mr. Miranda would give us the OK, but it's not. In fact, he told me that there is skateboard group that has organized and gone to meetings stressing to the council bikes will ruin the park, and they said "please don't let this one go". Skateboarders have come a long way in society and have worked hard to get their image changed from outcasts to accepted members in the community, I thought they would be the last group to outcast others. But, I was wrong. Of course it's not all skaters, and there are plenty that really don't care whether bikes ride the park or not, but they aren't the ones speaking up. So, we have to keep up our guards and continue to show the facts on how many more people will benefit from having this park open to bikes vs. the ones who weren't taught to share when they were young. I stressed the fact this morning that bikes are not looking to push the skaters out by any means, in fact two nights a week until we get our own facility would be acceptable. I also stressed the fact that the issue is more of an overcrowding problem rather than liability. Mr. Miranda realizes people will get hurt at our parks whether they are playing football, swimming, or skating and feels that the liability issue can be worked around. He also realizes that skateboards can damage the parks not just bikes, and I was impressed by the amount of homework he has done on the subject. If it was up to him I think we wouldn't have a problem but like he said "I have 7 other bosses to convince, and if they say no than it's a NO." So, I guess I'm wondering what do you think we should do now? I've learned in life that sitting around and waiting for a handout never gets you anywhere, and you need to take action if you really want something bad enough. The next city council meeting is September 7th, it might be very beneficial for us to go one more time and express the importance of shared use in this park. But, we need a huge presence, we need parents, brothers, sisters, friends, as many riders as we can find, and even skaters that have our backs. Can we organize in time for Monday, September 7th at 5:30pm? Can you go? I'll have a poll on the upper right hand corner that will allow you to vote as an RSVP type thing. Please, please, please, help out your fellow rider by attending. If the council sees the amount of people that really feel strongly about this subject they will make the right decision. We won't have any place to ride if we just sit around and complain about it. We have serious momentum right now, lets use it. In the meantime, we could use some thoughtful, respectful emails sent to our city council members. They don't have to be long, but please use spell check and don't attack anyone, or say nasty things about skaters. It's not about the skaters it's about us needing a place to ride. Here's a list of council members and their emails, again be respectful and short. A perfect example that you can copy and paste would be:

Dear Council Member,

Please consider allowing BMX shared use of the Santa Rita skate park, it is a more than adequate facility in a city that has no designated areas for freestyle BMX.

Victoria has a secret and I'm hoping it's not what I think it is. To quote Jerry Seinfeld "Whaaaat's the deal" with secrets around Tucson these days? I can understand keeping some spots hush in hopes they won't get busted by those who don't ride. But, are we really keeping our own friends from spots in our own backyards? Can't we just share guys? Here's the deal, back in the day there use to be a skate crew in town that was willing to share their spots if you shared yours. They didn't care if you rode bikes, they didn't care if you wore capri girl pants, all they cared is that they got a new spot to ride for sharing a little info. So, I propose the sharing is caring program. If you have a spot I want to ride and I have one you want, let's trade. We could make rules too, like no sharing with people from California, or people who ride scooters. It really amazes me to see all these new spots popping up in town when you think you've seen it all.

15 Years of Training...

and it sure as hell shows.

Backyard Sessions

Jack Brown is that quite kid with a big grin going five feet higher than you. He's always down for a good ole backyard session and a quick Twitter update to remind you about it. That reminds me, Clicked is on Twitter too, but I really don't understand all the hype so my updates are minimal at best.

Where's Waldo?

My boy Waldo sent through some pics of a recent trip he took to Cali. Waldo is fresh out of back surgery and should be on his ride in a month or so. Look for some action photos from him soon.
