I can't do this on my own, the powers at be start taking my emails with a grain of salt. But, they will start paying attention when they hear you. I need emails from riders, supporters, and most of all PARENTS. Here is an email that I received from a parent who's son lives here in Tucson, she lives in Milwaukee, WI. just read it:
For the City Council members:
I am the mother of 2 BMX riders - one in the city of Tucson - and I wanted to email my support for allowing BMX riders to use the Santa Rita Skate Park. There are places in Milwaukee that allow both skateboards and BMX bikes and both groups co-exist quite well together. I've gone to watch the BMX boys ride at these places and although it looks chaotic, there's a well-choreographed dance going on between the bikes and the skateboards. I've watched for hours and there were no accidents, no altercations, just fun. I was skeptical and a little worried until I saw how well they did together. All of the parents here are happy that the kids can ride at the parks. BMX riders need a safe, legal place to ride and they should be allowed at the Santa Rita Skate Park. The two groups will get along fine, the riders will have a safe place to ride - a win-win in my opinion. All the communities that have skateparks around here allow both skateboards and BMX bikes and they all find that it is a good thing for the kids and in turn good for the community. Please vote in favor of allowing BMX riders at Santa Rita.
Thank you, Maureen Haig Milwaukee, WI
I need emails like these. You know why? Because this is the response Ms. Haig and I received from the Parks and Rec. director Fred Gray.
Dear Ms. Haig: Thank you for your email regarding the need for a BMX park which was forwarded to us via Mike Hines. Tucson Parks and Recreation generally supports the joint, multiple and shared use of facilities when appropriately planned and designed for such use. However, for over ten years, the Santa Rita Skate Park was planned as a skate park and was designed and constructed for skateboard use only. The incorporation of BMX bike use would have required structural design modifications in order to improve the park’s overall durability. Such modifications include stronger psi concrete, the additional use of vertical metal edges on ledges and metal plates abutting round coping to protect the concrete. Again, none of these design modifications were included and the facility was constructed for skateboard use only and the project designer does not recommend BMX bikes at this particular facility. The Parks and Recreation Department recognizes and understands the popularity of BMX bike riding as well as the lack of local facilities for this activity. There will be future opportunities for the inclusion of such facilities as part of park improvement and construction projects. I invite your sons to participate in the planning process for those projects to ensure that BMX bike riding facility needs are addressed. In the meantime, your sons may wish to visit the BMX track at Pima County Parks and Recreation’s Manzanita Park located at 5250 S. Westover. Sincerely, Fred H. Gray, Jr.

Can someone else please remind Mr. Gray that we don't race? Not to mention the fact that you need a yearly membership of 60.00 dollars, and you have to pay every time you want to ride the track. How much does the Santa Rita "skate" park cost to ride daily? Other than the fact that taxes get taken out my check every month, nothing.
Here's the deal. I need emails like Ms. Haig's from you, your own experience, the times you got harassed, arrested, yelled at, or hurt when you weren't in a safe legal place. I need them from your parents who hope that you are riding in a safe legal place. The nonsense about not designed for bikes is a non issue, do you think it's a greater liability to have children in the streets than in a safe park? It is up to our elected officials to provide parks and safe places for the public, not the designers. It was Parks and Rec.'s job to realize that multi-use facilities is the norm nowadays. I'm even looking into retrofitting the park with the necessary metal to make it "bike friendly" as they say, what is Parks and Rec. doing? I feel that Parks and Rec didn't do their homework on this issue and they are trying everything they can to side step it.
You can email them through me at bikehines@gmail.com or feel free to email Mr. Gray and Mr. Miranda directly (Mr. Miranda is Mr. Gray's boss)

They have definitely been reading my emails, so you can CC me if you want to. I will also read some of the letters at the city council meeting on September 9th at 5:30.
Which brings me to another point, we have to go to this meeting! This one will be huge, local media is going to be on hand, if we make enough noise they will listen. Please help your city, your friends, and your fellow rider by attending. We can't get in, or a new park without proving we need one.
Thanks,
Mike Hines
